Re: The Sketch to Success University
One afternoon, I took a break from drawing. I ran to get some lunch to a little restaurant in the rain. I planted a foot and everything came crashing down. I fell. I hit my head and passed out, breaking every bone in my face!!
What does this have to do with drawing you are asking?!! A calamity turned into a BLESSING!
As my concussion cleared over the next several months, something miraculous happened... I could see, I could visualize with such clarity. I was astounded.. I picked up a pencil and I started to sketch, and sketch, and sketch.. Whatever appeared in my head I could quickly transform into beautiful artistic sketches. I became prolific, sketching in front of clients, winning projects, getting instant approvals. I became unstoppable.
How does this tale change your life? It was a few years later when I realized I had a gift, one that needed to be shared, a legacy. so I started pulling together classes, first for interns, then for state and national American Institute of Architects. The enthusiasm was intoxicating. But I could only teach 20-200 at a time.. What next?
Should I write a book? Perhaps go on TV and be the next Bob Ross? Ha! No!! I wanted to create a MOVEMENT! So here we are.. It is time to have more Fun in Design, to go back to that 5 year-old in us who drew flowers and dragons, and rockets FEARLESSLY! Where did that go? Let's get out from behind that glowing plastic box you stare at all day and reach for more creativity..
Can you imagine being able to sketch your ideas, making your designs come to life? Sitting down with clients and colleagues and being the Creator, instead of the Critic who is one of ten circled around a computer "critiquing" renderings from overseas or sketch-up models? We need to STOP showing other's work in our presentations as 'Precedence" or "Mood Pics".. Show your process, show your design. Sketch it. Sign it. "Art Sells" as Frank Gehry says.
What separates us from being replaced by outsourcing, and AI is our creativity!! Make sketching your SUPERPOWER! Be irreplaceable by the next computer program, Metaverse, or VR. Each of the technologies have a place, but they are just expensive and complex pencils. You still have to Create!!

It's hard to buck the trend, we don't even have drawing tables!

They also don't realize that talent, not technology, is power when it comes to successful design!
